LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE OF NEPAL

Posted by beingnepali at 5:16 AM
In Nepal alone more than 90 languages were spoken in the past. But these days some have died and some are in the verge of death. Some Neplai languages are Tibeto-Burman and others are indo European, Gurung, Magar, Sherpa, Thakali, Rai, Limbu, etc are Tibeto-Burmese languages and Nepali, Hindi, Mithili, Bhojpuri, Tharu etc are Indo-European language. So, Nepal is a multi-lingual country. Literature and music is nation’s property. If music is world language then literature is creativity. These two are the mirrors of past and future. A person’s inner confusions and feelings are hidden in the depths of literature and sentiments of the music. Actually, the literary personality is the creator of the human way of life.

Nepali language was developed from Vedic Period. Many more words are imported from Sanskrit language and Vedas. History shows that Nepali language was emerged from Karnali region as Khas Kura or language. Some stone inscriptions and copper inscriptions found in Karnali region are the evidences of Khas language. The vast territory of Sen state from medieval period helped to spread Nepali language from east to west. The book ”Bhaswati” (1457 B.S.) is the first ever written book in Nepali language, which was written by Shatananda.

After the unification of Nepal, Prithvi Narayan Shah also adopted Nepali language. Bhanubhakta is called the first Nepali poet who united Nepal through language. Before him, Subhandadas, Shaktiballava started to write poems. During the initial stage, Nepali books were written in poetic form and later on in paragraph form. Also, the time from unification of sugauli treaty is supposed as primarystage of Nepali language. The second stage of Neplai language is from 1873 to 1975 B.S. during the period where Bhanubhakta led the age and presented himself as ” Aadikabi” of Nepal. He wrote popular religious book in Nepali. His other books were Badhu Siksha, Bhaktamala, Prrasnottari, etc. Moti Ram Bhatta ( 1923-1953 B.S.) stood up as young poet or romantic poet and introduced Bhanubhakta and wrote Pikdoot, Bhramar Geet, Usha Charitra and Gajendra Moksha. other famous poets were Chakrapani Chalise, Rajiv Lochan, Shambhu Prasad Dhungel, pahalman Singh Swar, etc. The modern period starts from 1975 B.S. when Suktisindhou ( 1974 B.S. ) was published and lekhnath paudel wrote Pinjadako Suga ( 1975 B.S. ) . Nepali dramatist Bal Krishna Sama ( 1956 – 2038 B.S. ) led the literature field from drama and plays. He wrote Prem Pinda, Chisochulo, Mukunda Indira, Prahalad, etc. Laxmi Prasad Devkota ( 1966 – 2016 B.S. ) rose from different angle and mad separate identity and became ”Mahakabi”. His first creation Muna Madan is the everlasting wealth of Nepal. Madhav Prasad Ghimire was declared as ” Rastra Kabi” and his famous books are Gauri, rastra Nirmata, Papini Aama and others. Politics has engulfed and ruined many factors of nation development and literature is also no exception to it. Literature these days is turning in to business by venomenous bite of politics. So we must all be conscious and fight agains the germs that are ruining the identity of true essence of literature, Let us all be together for the flousrishment of good literature because good literature are the asset of the nation. The litterateurs have their own imagination ,and we shouldnot let any of the mafia agencies ruin or seize or even manipulate their imagination as their imagination really have magic to ssothe the panin and miserable feelings and bring smile to frown face and even possess the ability to uplift the country’s development.
